How to arrange the sockets in the bedroom?

  2. At what height to install?
  3. Location options

Lots of extension cords and wires, the need to turn off the TV to dry your hair, the wire from the iron that does not reach the outlet. Each of us has faced similar situations at least once. But they are so easy to avoid if during the repair you pay attention to the electrician's plan and think over the location and number of outlets. This is important for all areas, including the bedroom.

How many outlets should there be?

In order to correctly position the sockets in the bedroom, you need to have a ready-made interior plan and know as accurately as possible how many electrical appliances will be in the room. The bedroom is a place to sleep and relax, gadgets and work should remain outside its doors. But in reality, we often deal with a situation where the bedroom also plays the role of a study. And she almost always plays the role of a dressing room.

Zoning will help reduce the discomfort from this combination in the bedroom of the functions of several rooms. Competent zoning of an apartment is the best remedy for many outlets and wires.

That is why the plan for the location of the outlets is drawn up only when the interior design has already been thought out, and we know where the dressing table will be and where the work table will be.

When we know the answers to these questions, we can start counting the number of outlets. They should be counted according to a simple plan.

  • We take a bedroom design project or make a schematic sketch. Mentally, or better with a pencil on paper, we divide the room into zones.
  • We calculate how many electrical appliances will be in each zone, and which of them will require separate outlets. We do not keep the hairdryer and vacuum cleaner turned on all the time, and the power filter of the computer and the charger for the phone require separate outlets. A surge protector for a computer is a mandatory attribute, but it is unlikely that the monitor, system unit, router and other components will occupy all the connectors. They can be used for chargers, or they can be left in reserve. Do not forget that many surge protectors are now equipped with USB connectors.
  • Consider the power of the appliances. This will play a role in the selection of outlets and surge protectors.
  • Consider if the number of outlets will spoil the appearance of the room., whether it is possible to make some of them multitasking or even refuse them altogether. Consider their location in relation to the floor. The height of the sockets is no less important than their number.

At what height to install?

There is no single standard that would help you choose a place to connect equipment. It is possible to decide exactly at what height from the floor to place them in the bedroom only by knowing the height of the furniture. But it is possible to estimate at what level they will be located at the planning stage.

Your plans shouldn't go against the rules of electrical wiring. Therefore, if you plan to significantly change the existing location of the outlets in the room, contact a specialist. The places for switching on the equipment should be located in a practical and ergonomic manner.

  • Bedside tables. If they are, then when planning the installation locations of the outlets, you need to take into account the height of the bed. At the bed, we need 2 pieces - for the lamp and for charging, if you plan to charge the smartphone here, and not at the desktop. Accordingly, if this is a family bedroom, then 2 such sets of devices are needed. The easiest way is to use a block for 2 devices. Distance - 15–20 cm above the curbstone, respectively, approximately 60–80 cm from the floor.

If there are no pedestals, the unit is installed at a height of 30–90 cm from the floor.

  • Dressing table. You will need to connect the fixtures and appliances that you will use. It's not a fact that a paired block is suitable - the lighting can be located at a different height than sockets for beauty gadgets. Consider the length of the wires. The optimum height range is 30–120 cm. The spread is large, but it depends on many factors. Everything is quite individual.
  • Desktop. With an average table height of about 80 cm, the socket located under it should be at the level of 30–60 cm from the floor, near the work surface or above the table - at the level of 90–100 cm. Do not forget about the length of the power filter cord.
  • TV. The average height of the rosettes is 130 cm.
  • Other. General purpose sockets are best placed between 50 cm and 100 cm from the floor. Try to place them near the floor only if absolutely necessary - they will interfere with you during cleaning, and the convenience of using such outlets will not be the greatest.

Location options

Height is not the only factor to consider when planning outlets. Convenience and appearance play an equally important role. There are some tips to help you get it right.

By the bedside table

Before going to bed, we check mail, social networks, listen to music, read, watch a movie. And most of us use the alarm clock that is in our phone. This means that charging near the bed is a must.

However, if you prefer a regular alarm clock, nothing prevents you from moving the charging place to your desktop - this will only have a positive effect on your sleep quality.

Someone has sockets inside the bedside tables or behind them, someone does in the soft head of the bed. Think carefully - whether such non-standard options will be convenient for you. Perhaps the best option would be the classic placement of sockets above the curbstone.

If you are going to put a lamp on a table, the socket for it may well be doubled with a socket for charging. If the lamp hangs, think about whether the double outlet makes sense. Think about how high the sconce will hang, and how long its cord will be.

Another detail is the distance from the cabinet to the wall and the distance from the cabinet to the bed. It is quite possible that if these values are small, it will be easier for you to lower the outlet closer to the floor.

For TV

If you plan to allocate space for TV in the bedroom, decide right away whether it will stand on a special cabinet or hang on the wall opposite the bed. If you are doing a wall mount, the socket strip will be hidden behind it. This will probably be exactly the unit, since, in addition to the TV itself, you will need to connect a digital set-top box, and possibly also an acoustic system, a router, a satellite box and even a game console. Count the number of appliances carefully, this is especially important. Decide whether you will connect them to the network directly or through a pilot. The average number of outlets in this zone is from 1 to 5.

General purpose

Sockets can be designed for power tools, vacuum cleaner, humidifier, heater. It is better to have at least 2 sockets for them. Usually they are installed at the entrance, but there are several cases that require separate discussion.

  • Wardrobe. Backlighting will be needed here. It can be LED strip or spotlights. Determine the type of lighting - see if you need an outlet. The ideal option is a backlight with a motion sensor that turns on when the door is opened.
  • Air conditioning. You may need an outlet for it as well. It should be located in the immediate vicinity of the device, suitable for its high power. Many experts advise the safest, but radical option: to allocate a separate line for the air conditioner, connected directly to the dashboard. If this solution is acceptable to you, it is better to do so.

Work zone

The best solution, of course, is to take it out of the bedroom, but if the size of the apartment does not allow it, think over everything to the smallest detail.Notebook and desktop PC require different number of outlets. For the first, a charging socket is enough. For the second, a surge protector is needed to connect a system unit, a monitor. If you are using a printer or MFP, one more item is required. You may also need leads for a telephone wire and an Internet cable.

And also you need to take care of the lighting of the workplace. Therefore, the desktop may need 2–4 sockets.

For iron

If you are going to do ironing in the bedroom, this point must be taken into account. Select a place where you will put your ironing board, and place an outlet next to it (suitable for a powerful appliance) - this should be a free wall, near which there will be no furniture, so that you can move freely.

At the dressing table

In this place, the right light is most important. This can be a backlight built into the mirror itself, or a separate lamp. The light must fall evenly and be of sufficient brightness. This must be taken into account. In addition to lighting, think about what devices you will use. Hair dryer, curling iron, manicure lamp, epilator are unlikely to be used at the same time. The average number of outlets at the dressing table is from 2 to 4.

Placing outlets is a painstaking process, but very important. The comfort of your life directly depends on it. Try to find a balance between design and functionality, be sure to follow safety measures - and the results of repairs will delight you for many years.
